Exports of Norwegian salmon continue to rise
The value of exports of Norwegian salmon in July totalled NOK 3.6 billion. According to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council, this is an increase of NOK 358 million, or 11 percent, compared to the same month last year.
“Sustained growth in the demand for Norwegian salmon continues to drive exports,” says Paul T. Aandahl, Branch Manager for Salmon and Trout at the Norwegian Seafood Council. By way of comparison, total salmon exports in July 2008 were half of those in July of this year.Measured in product weight, this corresponds to an export of 82,653 tonnes of salmon in the month of July, an increase of 17 per cent compared to last July.
To date, total exports for salmon have totalled NOK 25 billion. This is NOK 4.5 billion more than the same period last year. Measured in product weight, the export volume thus far this year has increased to 550,000 tonnes, up 10 per cent from last year.
Lower salmon price than last year, but higher than previous month
The price of fresh whole salmon in July was NOK 40.60 per kilo, 8 per cent lower than the same month last year. The price of salmon in July was 12 per cent higher than the average price in June.
Exports to the EU up
The value of exports of Norwegian salmon to the EU in July totalled well over NOK 2.3 billion, up 10 per cent from the same month last year. Measured in product weight, the total volume exported was 55,630 tonnes, an increase of 15 per cent. Poland and France were the largest markets in the EU for Norwegian salmon in July.
Volume of exports to Eastern Europe up
Measured in value, the export of salmon to Eastern Europe totalled NOK 432 million, a slight decrease of 3 per cent compared to July 2013. In the meantime, the volume increased by 12 per cent to a total of 11, 433 tonnes compared to last month.
Exports to Asia and the U.S. up
The volume of exports of salmon to Asia was NOK 560 million in July, an increase of 8 per cent compared to the same month last year. This growth was driven by a volume increase of 1,700 tonnes from July last year, to a total of 11, 923 tonnes.
The volume of exports of salmon to the U.S. was NOK 154 million in July, an increase of 106 per cent compared to the same month last year. The export volume nearly doubled to 2,177 tonnes.
Trout exports down
The volume of exports of Norwegian fjord trout in July totalled NOK 189 million, a decrease of NOK 24 million, or 11 per cent. Measured in product weight, the exported volumes were down by 15 per cent to a total of 4,000 tonnes. To date, trout exports have totalled NOK 1.4 billion, an increase of NOK 194 million, or 16 per cent, compared to the same period in 2013. The biggest markets for Norwegian fjord trout are Russia and Japan.
