Highest value ever for salmon exports in February
Salmon exports amounted to NOK 3.3 billion in February, representing a growth of 35 per cent or NOK 856 million since February last year, according to figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Salmon exported in February amounted to 66,900 tonnes, 3 per cent higher than the same month last year.
- The continued growth in demand for salmon and almost infinite supply has helped keep prices strong," says Paul Aandahl, Marketing Manager for Salmon and Trout at the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Salmon prices still strong
The price for fresh whole salmon was NOK 47.55 in January.This is NOK 11.17 or 31 per cent higher than in the same month last year.The price in February was 3 per cent lower than the average price in January.
Supply to EU increasing in both volume and value
In terms of value, the exports to EU was 34 per cent higher than the same month last year.The export volume, measured in product weight, to the EU was 4 per cent higher compared to last year.France, Poland and Russia were the biggest markets for Norwegian salmon in February, though France and Russia fell in volume as compared to last year.The decline in volumes for these countries was countered by a strong increase in exports to other countries in the EU, including Great Britain and the Netherlands.
Growth in value for export to Russia
The export value to Russia was 13 per cent higher than in February 2013. Volumes fell by 12 per cent compared to the same time last year.
Increase for exports to Asia and the USA
The growth in value for the entire Asian market was 48 per cent.This growth is driven by strong prices and the fact that the Asian market bought 13 per cent more Norwegian salmon than last year.The majority of the markets, apart from Japan and Indonesia, are increasing their volumes of Norwegian salmon.
The export of salmon to the USA continues to increase and was 163 per cent higher in value compared to the same month last year.The reason for this growth can be attributed to a combination of higher prices and greater volumes.
Growth for trout
The export of Norwegian fjord trout increased by NOK 62 million or 45 per cent, to a total of NOK 201 million. At the same time volumes increased by 5 per cent. Russia was our biggest market for Norwegian fjord trout in February.
