New export record for Norwegian salmon
In the first nine months of 2013, the value of exports of Norwegian salmon totalled NOK 27.3 billion. This is an increase of NOK 6.1 billion compared to the same period last year. The volume of exports in the first nine months of the year totalled 671,000 tonnes, down by 5.5 percent or 39,000 tonnes compared to the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council. In September, exports of Norwegian salmon increased in value by NOK 964 million to NOK 3.4 billion, and volume was up by 9 percent to 92,000 tonnes.
“The increase in the value of exports is attributable to higher prices combined with increasing demand for Norwegian salmon,” explains Paul Aandahl, manager salmon and trout with the Norwegian Seafood Council. “The price increase is in part a consequence of reduced supplies of Norwegian salmon.”
Norwegian salmon prices hit higher level
In the third quarter, the average price of fresh whole Norwegian salmon was NOK 39.02 per kg. This is NOK 11.37 higher than in the third quarter of last year. In September, the average price was NOK 33.50 per kg, up by NOK 7.17 compared to September 2012 – even though it was down by NOK 7.20 compared to August this year.

Exports to France, the biggest market, have declined by 6 per cent, while exports to Poland, the second biggest market, have increased by 9 per cent. The share of Norwegian salmon exports destined for the EU has increased from 65 percent last year to 69 percent this year. This year to date, Eastern Europe has imported 17 per cent less Norwegian salmon than in the same period last year. The biggest declines are in exports to Russia and Ukraine.
