So far this year, Norway has exported herring worth NOK 2.1 billion. A decrease of 11 per cent compared with the same period in 2014. Norway´s mackerel exports this year have totalled NOK 3.6 billion, a decrease of 10 per cent year-on-year. Japan is the largest export market for Norwegian pelagic fish, followed by the Netherlands and China.
”The combined export volumes of herring, mackerel and capelin have declined by 26 per cent so far this year. Although the export price has increased, this has not been sufficient to offset the reduced volume and so the total export value has declined”, says Paul Aandahl, Analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Council.
In November, Norway exported herring valued at NOK 473 million. A decrease of 4 per cent year-on-year. Mackerel exports totalled NOK 612 million. An increase of 3 per cent on the same month in 2014.
Japan is the largest export market for mackerel
So far this year Norway has exported 320,000 tonnes of frozen whole mackerel. This is some 13 per cent less than during the same period in 2014. The largest export markets for mackerel have been Japan, China, the Netherlands and Nigeria. Mackerel which is bound for China, is processed there and then sent on to its final destination, the consumer market in Japan. The average price for frozen whole mackerel so far this year has been NOK 10.60 per kg, an increase of 3 per cent year-on-year.
In November, 57,000 tonnes of frozen whole mackerel were exported. This represents a decrease of 3 per cent from the same month in 2014. The largest volumes of frozen whole mackerel have gone to Nigeria, China and Turkey.
Ukraine's herring market so far this year
93,000 tonnes of frozen whole herring have been exported so far this year. This is a marked decline of 30 per cent compared with the same period in 2014. Ukraine, Lithuania and Egypt have been the biggest markets for herring during this year. The average price of frozen whole herring was NOK 8.64 per kg, which is 22 per cent higher than during the corresponding period last year.
In November, 21,000 tonnes of frozen whole herring were exported. This is an increase of 19 per cent year-on-year. The largest volumes have gone to Ukraine and Lithuania.
65,000 tonnes of frozen herring fillet products have been exported so far this year, which is a decrease of 28 per cent from the same period in 2014. The largest markets by volume have been Germany, Poland, Lithuania and the Netherlands. The average price of frozen herring fillet products was NOK 13.24 per kg, representing an increase of 15 per cent compared with the same period in 2014.
In November, some 12,000 tonnes of frozen herring fillet products were exported, which is 37 per cent less than in November 2014. The largest volumes have been imported by Germany and Poland.
