Reports and publications
You can find all reports and publications in the reports archive.
We publish reports concerning a number of different seafood related topics: seafood studies, trade flow analyses and market reports. We publish reports written by both the seafood council and other sources. In the reports archive you can filter the reports by type and country.
Data sources
We buy seafood related data from many sources. Below is a list of the sources for the four main types of statistics.
About Norwegian trade statistics
The numbers are based on information collected through TVINN (TVINN is the Norwegian Customs electronic system for exchanging customs declarations). The Norwegian seafood council receives the numbers from Statistics Norway. The numbers are classified according to valid commodity codes (HS codes) found in the Customs tariff.
Values
Product weight in tons. Net weight of the product.
Product weight in tons WFE. Estimated weight when calculating the product weight to whole fish equivalents.
Value in 1000 NOK. The statistical value for the goods when passing the Norwegian border, also called the FOB-value (Free On Board). Taxes, customs or other fees are not included in the statistical value.
Price in NOK/kg. The price is calculated by dividing the statistical value by the product weight.
Errors
Errors might be present if there has been errors in the customs declaration, for example if incorrect commodity codes have been used, or if the statistical value includes costs which should have been left out.
Possible errors can be reported to the Norwegian seafood council by sending an inquiry to: insight@seafood.no. The errors will be communicated to Statistics Norway. Possible corrections will be included in the revised numbers.
Note that the weekly numbers are not revised. Only monthly and yearly numbers are revised.
Depersonalized data
In the weekly export statistics: For products in markets where few exporters operate, the data might be anonymized. This is to prevent the prices of individual exporters to be reflected in the numbers.
Statistics Norway anonymizes data in the following cases:
· One exporter has more than a 90% share of the exports to a country
· Two exporters have more than a 95% share of the exports to a country
· There are three or less exporters to a market.
Trade statistics for other countries
We buy trade statistics for several other countries.
Updates
The monthly numbers for Norwegian trade are updated on the third working day of the month. Revised numbers are made available on the 15th of the month, or the first working day following the 15th.
We receive the weekly Norwegian trade on Wednesdays.
As soon as we receive the trade statistics for other countries they are updated on the website. The date varies according to country.
Our main source for "consumtion numbers" is household panel data. We buy panel data for 13 markets from Gfk/Kantar.
The numbers are gathered through household panels, where a panel of households register their purchases.
The numbers are based on panels, and aggregated to represent the household population in the specific country. These numbers do not include out of home purchases and will therefore not represent the total seafood market. Since the numbers are estimated, the volumes will not be exact. The numbers will however give a good indication of the trends for seafood consumption. In addition information about demographics and retail are available.
A more precise description about household panels is available on the thematic page.
Updates:
We receive monthly numbers from Gfk/Kantar. You can find the publishing dates in our calendar.
Revisions: From time to time there are methodological changes that lead to trend breaks. In these cases old numbers are deleted. A list of revisions is published here.
We buy sales data from NielsenIQ in Norway and the US.
Nielsen receives the sales data directly from the retailers. The numbers give exact information about volumes, values and prices. Nielsen includes only modern retail, so no special shops are included.
The sales numbers are available here. You can also read about the numbers in more detailed through presentations gathered on this site.
Sales data for the US and Norway can be found here.
Updates:
Sales numbers are updated monthly. Nielsen operated with 13 4-week periods in a year. The numbers are updated 2-3 weeks after the end of a period.
Since 2012 we have conducted a consumer survey in some of the most important seafood markets. This study is also referred to as the SCI (Seafood consumer insight). The study was a collaboration with Kantar until 2020, after which we collaborate with IPSOS. Some countries are represented each year, others more sporadically. The study is conducted online and include about 1000 respondents per country.
In 2020 the study was updated, therefore most of the questions were altered. In 2021 the study was split into two parts: a smaller tracker which runs several times a year, and a more extensive deep dive study that runs once a year.
