Companies processing quality-approved skrei outside Norway have to apply for a licence in order to obtain the right to use the trademark.
Licencing is used to safeguard the joint investments by the Norwegian seafood industry, and to ensure that only Norwegian skrei produced in Norway and exported in line with the Norwegian standard for skrei, (SN/TS 9406:2022 - Skrei), and traded and processed outside Norway, can be labelled with the quality-approved skrei trademark.
If your company owns processing facilities which use or buy quality-approved skrei from Norway, you can obtain a licence to use the quality-approved skrei trademark on your products.

Guarantee for first-class cod
- The quality mark Skrei denotes spawning mature skrei that is selected, processed and packed according to specific requirements described in a separate quality standard - SN / TS 9406: 2022 - Skrei. The purpose of the standard is to contribute to good and stable quality of fresh cod and cod products.
- Every effort is made to safeguard the quality of this fish. Only cod that meets the quality requirements can be sold with the quality label for cod. The quality mark guarantees that the cod meets the quality requirements set by standard.
- Any approved company that brands and sells cod under the quality label is responsible for ensuring that the quality requirements are met. The Norwegian Seafood Council manages the quality label on behalf of the seafood industry.

Licencing procedure
In order to use the quality-approved skrei trademark on products produced outside Norway, the production company located outside Norway must sign a licence agreement with the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Step 1: License Application
In the online licence application, you are asked to provide general information about your company, your Norwegian exporter(s) and which skrei product(s) you intend to label with the quality-approved skrei trademark.
In the licence application, you are also asked to inform us whether your company complies with any certified management systems
Step 2: Exporter Declaration
The exporter declaration should be completed and submitted by the Norwegian exporter(s) from whom you are buying Norwegian skrei.
The purpose of the exporter declaration is to provide documentation pertaining to the flow of goods from the Norwegian exporter to the production facility outside Norway.
The Norwegian Seafood Council will contact the exporter directly, using the information submitted by you when submitting the licence application.
Step 3: License Agreement
Upon receiving the licence application and exporter declaration, the Norwegian Seafood Council HQ in Tromsø will process the application, and make a final decision on whether to accept or reject it, based on its merits.
The applicant will then be informed of the decision. If the application is successful, the applicant will receive a licence agreement, and information regarding use of the quality label. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified in writing and will the opportunity to modify their application or appeal the decision, if they so wish.
Product labelling
After signing the licence agreement, the licensee will be allowed to use the trademark. The licensee must present all product packaging bearing the quality-approved skrei trademark to the NSC for approval, prior to commercial use.
The quality label must always be used together with the licencee's own trademark(s).

When the licence agreement is in force, the licensee’s right to use the quality label will be listed on the Norwegian Seafood’s Council’s website.
Export of products labelled with the quality-approved skrei trademark
Please note that you will only be able to export products bearing the quality-approved skrei trademark, which are packaged and labelled outside Norway if the export occurs inside a customs union (e.g., the European Union).
