The figures show an increase of 537 million, or 3 per cent, for the export value of Norwegian salmon compared to the same period last year. The exported volume, measured by product weight, was 492,000 tonnes – an increase of 6 per cent.
"We see a growth in demand for Norwegian salmon within the EU. The European countries have received most of the salmon that would otherwise have been sold to Russia. The price of salmon has gone down, but a weak Norwegian krone promises value for Norwegian exporters", says Paul T. Aandahl, analyst at the Norwegian Seafood Council.
In June, Norway exported salmon for NOK 3.8 billion, which corresponds to an increase of 15 per cent compared to last year. Measured by product weight, it is a quantity of 85,000 tonnes of salmon; an increase of 3 per cent compared to June 2014.
Price adjustment
The average price for fresh whole salmon was NOK 41.14 per kg in the first half of 2015. This is 6 per cent lower than the same period last year. The export price in June was NOK 41.01 million, which is 13 per cent higher than the average price for the same month in 2014.
Supply to the EU increases
Norway exported salmon to the EU worth a total of NOK 16 billion in the first half of 2015. This represents an increase of 11 per cent year-on-year. The exported volume, measured by product weight, shows an increase of 10 per cent to 373,000 tonnes compared to 2014. Measured by volume, more than three quarters of Norway’s salmon export went to EU countries.
Poland was the biggest market for Norwegian salmon in the first six months, with an export volume of 63,000 tonnes in terms of product weight. This represents an increase of 9 per cent from last year.
Decline in export to Eastern Europe
In terms of value, salmon exports to Eastern Europe was NOK 615 million in the first half of 2015. This is a reduction of 74 per cent. At the same time, volume was reduced by 70 per cent or 41,000 tonnes compared to the same period last year. The main reason for the decline is the Russian import ban.
Increase of export to Asia and the US
Norway exported salmon to Asia worth a total of NOK 3,5 billion in the first half of 2015. This is an increase of 15 per cent compared to the same month last year. The growth is in line with a volume increase of 20 per cent, to a total of 76,000 tonnes, in the first half of the year.
Norway exported salmon to the US worth a total of NOK 1.2 billion in the first half of 2015. This is an increase of 27 per cent compared to last year. The exported volume, measured by product weight, was 18,000 tonnes – an increase of 38 per cent.
Decline in export of trout
Norway's trout export decreased by NOK 272 million or 22 per cent in the first half of the year, to a total export value of NOK 962 million. The main buyers of Norwegian trout are Belarus and Poland.
